Personal stories provide insights into saved lives: The traveling exhibition "My Story" at the Hannover Medical School (MHH) gives young transplant recipients a face.
On large banners, 20 young organ transplant recipients describe their lives as recipients of donor organs such as hearts, livers, lungs, or kidneys. Photographer Micha Neugebauer from Hanover portrayed them for the exhibition.
The photo project was organized by "KiO Youth," the junior team of the non-profit organization Kinderhilfe Organtransplantation – Sportler für Organspende e. V. (KiO), which was awarded the Organ Donation Prize by the "Über Leben" Foundation.
The MHH Transplantation Center is the only one in Germany that performs all organ transplants in adults, children, and adolescents. Lung transplants in children and even infants are performed only at the MHH. At the MHH alone, almost 1,000 people are waiting for an organ; nationwide, the number is more than 8,000.
The KiO association provides financial and psychosocial support to families with children suffering from organ disease. Its supporting members include over 100 Olympic, world, and European champions.
